چکیده

We examine heterotic M-theory with a parallel M5 brane. After deriving the four-dimensional low-energy supergravity potential including open membrane instantons, gaugino condensation and M5 brane instantons, we focus on the first two non-perturbative effects. We find in the pure open membrane case, where the parallel M5 gets stabilized at the middle of the orbifold interval, that the vacuum energy is manifestly positive and that the orbifold-length and volume modulus are stabilized. Here, the leading terms of the potential vanish and it is essential to include all subleading corrections. In the pure gaugino condensation case the orbifold-length is stabilized, essentially from Kähler-potential terms, at small values and the M5 at the hidden boundary. Since the M5 looses then its influence on the running of the Calabi-Yau volume, the same stabilisation should occur if the M5 would be absent. Finally we combine both open membrane and gaugino condensation effects and show how the latter slightly modifies the dominant open membrane effects. For those vacua we determine the supersymmetry-breaking scale and the gravitino mass. [email protected] [email protected]

Heterotic–type IIA duality with fluxes

In this paper we study a possible non-perturbative dual of the heterotic string compactified on K3× T 2 in the presence of background fluxes. We show that type IIA string theory compactified on manifolds with SU(3) structure can account for a subset of the possible heterotic fluxes. This extends our previous analysis to a case of a non-perturbative duality with fluxes. August, 2006 email: jan.l...

On De Sitter Vacua in Strongly Coupled Heterotic String Theory

We describe how 4d de Sitter vacua might emerge from 11d heterotic M-theory. Non-perturbative effects and G-fluxes play a crucial role leading to vacua with Fterm supersymmetry breaking and a positive energy density. Charged scalar matter fields are no longer massless in these vacua thus solving one of the problems of the heterotic string. Moreover, interesting dark matter candidates appear in ...

Moduli Stabilization in the Heterotic/IIB Discretuum

We consider supersymmetric compactifications of type IIB and weakly coupled heterotic string-theory in the presence of G resp. H-flux and various nonperturbative effects. We point out that non-perturbative effects change the Hodge structure of the allowed fluxes in type IIB significantly. In the heterotic case it is known that, in contrast to the potential read off from dimensional reduction, t...

Five-Brane Dynamics and Inflation in Heterotic M-Theory

Generic heterotic M-theory compactifications contain five-branes wrapping nonisolated genus zero or higher genus curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold. Non-perturbative superpotentials do not depend on moduli of such five-branes. We show that fluxes and non-perturbative effects can stabilize them in a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum. We also show that these five-branes can be stabilized in a dS vacuum...

Holomorphic Couplings In Non-Perturbative String Compactifications

In this thesis we present an analysis of several aspects of four-dimensional, non-perturbative N = 1 compactifications of string theory. Our focus is on the study of brane dynamics and their effective physics as encoded in the holomorphic couplings of the low-energy N = 1 effective action, most prominently the superpotential W . The thesis is divided into three parts. In part one we derive the ...
